Howard University ready to start town center project - Washington Business Journal:

According to the solicitation, Howard wants to lease the land for the constructio n of more than 300rental apartments, 70,00 square feet of retail (including a 35,000-square-foot groceryy store) and parking. The area is at the cornee of V Street and Georgia Avenue NW, three blocks nortg of the Shaw-Howard University Metro station and across from Howard'se campus. Developer . had been planningh 322 apartments, 450 parking spaces and a Philadelphia-basedx Fresh Grocer store for the site but was not mentionef inthe solicitation. Howard Universitgy officials were not availablefor comment. The schook named Sidney Ribeau, current president of Bowlinv Green University, its 16th president May 7.
The searcbh for developers was enabled by a land swap betweenm the universityand D.C. that Mayor Adriann Fenty announcedApril 24. In it, D.C. dealt away a forme bakery at Georgia Avenue and W StreertNW -- known as the Bond Building -- to Howared University for a 63,400-square-foot parcel at Floridaa and Sherman avenues. A D.C. Superior Court judgw ruled in 2005 that the parcel belongedx tothe District. The District plands a second solicitation forthat parcel, which faces both Floridaw Avenue and Seventh Street, for a mixed-use project featuring at least 300 housing units. Responsez to the solicitation are dueJune 10.
