Wilcoc did not respond to requests for comment from the PhoenixzBusiness Journal, but has told other media that Arpaio is goint after her because of her oppositiobn to his immigration policies. The sheriff’d office investigation of Wilcox is the latesgt in a number of fightbetween Arpaio, Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas and the Maricops County Board of Supervisors. Wilcox and Superviso Don Stapley voted Wednesday toblock $1.4 million in statwe money earmarked for Thomas’s office to enforce immigration and human smuggling laws. The board deadlocked at 2 to 2 on that vote stallinf thestate money.
Supervisofr Max Wilson missed the vote becauses of illness and the matter could be Stapley and Wilcox earlier this year triecd toblock $1.6 million in state funding for Arpaio’s immigration enforcement. Wilcox said the sheriff’s immigration sweepsz and policies unfairlytarget Hispanics. Thomae and Arpaio secured indictments against Stapley last year charginyg that he failed to properluy disclose business and real estatedevelopment deals.
